Postcards from Romania

The last days are for the greetings, the bags and postcards. I have three snapshots that I would send in Italy, images, reminding that the Earth is one and turns and, in his wanderings, either leave it upside down a portion of the world.

Oltenia, Romania south-western region of spas and monasteries. In these lands, between the end of the 800 and the first decades of the 900, the Italians emigrated to work in construction, mines, such as loggers or farmers. A census of about 10,000 speak Italian in Romania in the late '20s, years unparalleled in the economy and the Romanian culture. It was the time when Bucharest was the 'Little Paris', while the Italians left misery and suffering with a suitcase full of hopes. Originating mainly in the Triveneto, Italian immigrants have found in the land of the Carpathian generous hospitality. Many have remained despite subsequent seizure of power by the Communists and the difficulties that have emerged from the distrust and controls surrounding anyone with foreign relations, no matter if they were friends and relatives. Today the Italian community, as all ethnic minorities in the country, has its own representative in parliament.

Universitate the corner of Piazza is one of the most beautiful buildings in Bucharest: Coltea the hospital, the oldest of the capital, built in 1704 to assist the poor. The beauty neoclassical building, the dome and bas-reliefs are not the only reason that led me to choose this second postcard from Romania. There's more: the health care system at this latitude is apparently universal, but if you look a bit 'more attention, we notice that in reality corruption is a real institution in hospitals. During the years of the scheme was used to bring the doctor a package of Kent, but now you pay in cash in a sealed envelope, otherwise the complete disregard for the patient (in January Mihai Constantinescu, 63, was left dead in the hall ' waiting for a hospital in southern Romania, because, as stated by a nurse In an interview, "could not afford the bribe). Health is just one example, perhaps the most striking, of the rampant corruption that creates a double-Romanian citizenship status. That same double status which divides the Italians who have access to the corridors of power and who does not; groove that determines one among many, who can become an entrepreneur 'successful' and who's not. Latest news: Minister of Youth and Sport, Ridzi Monica, has just been accused to be discharged a month ago, mismanagement and misappropriation of public funds. Better Romania.

The last postcard is from a place that I visited a month and a half ago. They are the former salt mine di Slănic-Prahova, in Muntenia, non lontano da Bucarest.
